The Africian American Athletes Hall of Fame was founded in 1987, and was formerly known as the Stockton Black Sports Hall of Fame founded by Ricky Warren and Archie Harris. The first induction ceremony was held on Friday, June 19, 1987 at the Stockton Inn. At the time, the question was asked, "Why did Stockton need a (Black Sports Hall of Fame)African American Sports Hall of Fame?" After all, the City Of Stockton already had one Athletic Hall of Fame, as well as one at the local institution of higher education, the University of Pacific. The answer was clear: no African Americans were in those other prestigious Halls of Fame. In 1987, in the first African American Athletes induction ceremony, Mr. Eddie Macon was inducted, along with Dick Bass, George Moton, John Nisby and Charles Washington.
On April 26, 2008, one of our own, Mr. Eddie Macon of the Chicago Bears, was honored by the University of the Pacific by having his number, 41, retired. It will be added to the wall of the Spanos Center, becoming the 14th jersey to be retired. That evening of celebration and recognition provided a unique opportunity for connecting Pacific's heritage of outstanding athletic alumni and Hall of Famers with the current generation of exceptional student-athletes. The African American Athletes Hall of Fame was represented front and center by Coach Charles Washington, Coach Ben Parks and Sam Dickerson of the Los Angeles Rams. Here is an article with some history of our AAAHOF inductee Eddie Macon:
On August 19, 2011, (on the left) the great "Coach Ben Parks died". Coach Parks was a teacher and coach at John Marshall Middle school and Edison High school and an inductee in the Black Sports Hall of Fame of Stockton aka African American Athletes Hall of Fame of Stockton. Coach has a long legacy in Stockton going back to the 1950's and he continued that legacy when he moved his family and took a teaching and coaching job at Menlo Atherton High School in the Bay Area in 1968. (more information and bio coming). 8/20/2011.
